Tracer wire should follow the buried nonmetallic line closely enough that the surface locate represents the pipe or conduit path. For most residential open-trench work, the practical goal is simple: keep the tracer wire continuous, visible at access points, and protected from mechanical damage during backfill.

Plain-English rule: the wire is there so someone can find the buried line later. Do not treat it as a random spare conductor or as a power cable.

Open Trench Is Not The Same As HDD

Directional drilling, boring, and pipe bursting can require high-strength copper-clad steel with specific break-load requirements.

Do not over-spec the wrong product: if the project calls for 450 lb, 1,150 lb, or 4,700 lb break-load tracer wire, verify the engineering specification before ordering standard pure copper wire.
