Tracer Wire Color System
Tracer Wire Selection Guide
Tracer Wire Color System
A jobsite-ready guide for choosing VOLTIC STONE 14 AWG solid copper tracer wire by underground utility type, APWA color practice, project length, and future locating needs.

Core Colors
Yellow, blue, green, orange, and red cover the most common gas, water, sewer, communication, and conduit identification needs.
Project Lengths
Short residential runs and longer contractor pulls can be planned from the same color family, instead of forcing every buyer into one reel size.
Real Purpose
Tracer wire is for creating a continuous conductive path for future locating. It is not a substitute for building power wire.
Module 1
Start With The Underground Utility Color
Color does not make the signal stronger by itself, but it helps the next installer, locator, homeowner, or inspector understand what the buried line is supposed to represent. The matrix below follows common APWA color practice. Always verify the project drawings, utility owner requirements, and local rules before installation.
| Color | Common Utility Use | Best VOLTIC STONE Product Link | Best Fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and gaseous materials | 14 AWG Yellow Gas Line Tracer Wire | Propane service, PE gas service locating, farm or residential gas runs where permitted |
| Blue | Potable water | 14 AWG Blue Water Line Tracer Wire | Private water line, PEX or HDPE water service, irrigation main where blue is specified |
| Green | Sewer and drain | 14 AWG Green Sewer Line Tracer Wire | Sewer lateral, drain line, septic system, nonmetallic force-main locating |
| Orange | Communication, alarm, signal, and fiber | 14 AWG Orange Communications Tracer Wire | Fiber conduit, communication duct, low-voltage pathway locating |
| Red | Electric power and electrical conduit identification | 14 AWG Red Electric Conduit Tracer Wire | Nonmetallic electrical conduit path marking. Not for carrying power. |

The 4-Step Selection System
Most tracer wire selection mistakes happen because the buyer starts with price or length first. Start with the buried utility type, then confirm the jobsite method, access points, and line length.
Identify Utility
Choose yellow, blue, green, orange, or red by the buried line type.
Confirm Method
Separate open-trench residential work from HDD, boring, or pipe bursting.
Plan Access
Leave usable wire ends, test points, or access boxes for future locating.
Test Before Backfill
Check continuity and the locate signal before closing the trench.

Module 4
Where Each Color Shows Up On Real Projects

Utility Water, Sewer, Gas
Match the jacket color to the utility owner or project specification.

Private Water And Irrigation
Useful for homeowners and small contractors who want private buried lines to be findable later.

Fiber And Communication
Orange tracer wire supports locating for nonmetallic communication conduit paths.

HDD And Boring
Directional drilling may require high-strength CCS tracer wire. Do not assume standard pure copper is enough.

Pure Copper Fits Small Projects Best
VOLTIC STONE 14 AWG tracer wire uses a true-gauge solid copper conductor for stable locating signal on residential, irrigation, and small-contractor open-trench runs.
For municipal HDD, boring, or pipe bursting, check the project specification first. Those jobs may require higher break-load tracer wire.
Module 6
Common Buyer Mistakes To Avoid
Buying The Wrong Color
Signal may still travel, but the next locator may misread the line type. Match the color to the job when possible.
Skipping Waterproof Connections
Underground splices need direct-bury waterproof connectors. Bare twists, tape, or indoor wire nuts are not a long-term buried solution.
Using It As Power Wire
Tracer wire is for locating signal paths. It is not a substitute for 120V/240V building wire or a buried power feeder.

Final Selection
Choose The Color First, Then The Length
Use the product links below to choose the correct VOLTIC STONE tracer wire page. If a project specification calls for high-strength CCS, HDD, pipe bursting, or a dedicated access-point system, review the project requirements before purchasing.
